Accidentally deleting important text messages may not be a rare story around you. When you regularly delete iPhone messages or free up storage space by mass deleting, it happens that you delete something you want to keep. But don’t panic. This post will show you how to see deleted messages on your iPhone.
Method 1 Retrieve deleted messages from iCloud backup
To see your deleted messages on your iPhone, you can give a shot to iCloud backup. This fix only works when your iPhone is set to backup to iCloud. It will revert your phone to the point when you made that backup, hence recovering your deleted messages. But please note that it also means you might lose some newly-created data. And you must remember your iCloud password to regain your data.
Step 1: Open Settings on your phone and tap the Apple ID profile at the top.
Step 2: Navigate to iCloud > iCloud Backup, where you can check the time of your last successful backup. Make sure it was before you deleted the texts on your phone.
Step 3: Go back to the main Settings app menu. Then navigate to General > Reset > Erase All Content and Settings. In the pop-up dialogue, choose Erase Now.
Step 4: It takes a few minutes to reset your phone to factory conditions. You’ll be greeted with the iPhone’s initial welcome screen. Follow the on-screen instructions until you visit the Apps & Data page. Here, choose Restore from iCloud Backup.
Step 5: Sign in to iCloud by entering your password, and choose the last backup you want to recover.
Now check if you can see the deleted messages on your iPhone.

Method 3 Find deleted files on iPhone from iTunes or Finder
If you have backed up your iPhone onto a PC or Mac, you can try to retrieve deleted files from iTunes (Windows OS) or Finder (Mac). However, if you have synced with this PC or Mac recently, this method may not work for you.
If you’re using PC or macOS Mojave or earlier on your Mac, you can try to restore a backup with iTunes by following the steps below.
Step 1: Connect your iPhone to your computer. Open iTunes on your PC.
Step 2: Click the phone icon at the top.
Step 3: Choose Summary from the left menu. Then check if the latest backup is made before you deleted the messages. If so, click Restore Backup. Hopefully, you can get your deleted messages back.
If you find it inaccessible to click Restore Backup, you may need to change your backup preference from iCloud to This Computer. Of course, you can change it back after the restoration. If this fix doesn’t work for you, try method 4.
If you’re using a macOS Catalina or later, Finder is the place where you may get your data recovered and messages back.
Step 1: Plug the mobile device into your computer. Then open Finder and choose your phone’s name under Locations.
Step 2: Click Manage Backups and you can see a pop-up showing a list of available backups. Check if the latest backup predates the time you delete the messages. If it does, click OK.
Step 3: Click Restore iPhone to start retrieving your messages back.
Method 4 Contact your phone carrier
Some service providers keep a record of your text messages as well as call history. Therefore, if you really need these messages back, you can consider reaching out to them. Ask for their technical support. And even if they fail to recover your text messages, they might offer some suggestions worth trying.
That’s all for seeing deleted text messages on iPhone. Hope you find it helpful.
