What can you do with an IP address?

When tracking someone’s location, most people would first think of finding that person’s IP address. Our devices use IPs to find and communicate with each other, so you can think of it as an online home address. With an IP address, we may know the approximate location of a person.

But here’s the catch. IP addresses are mostly meaningless. When looking up the IP address, usually you’ll only see street names or a nearby building name, but never the exact location like room numbers. And in most cases, people in the same region share one IP address.

Knowing the IP address may help locate a person online, but it would take time, equipment and computer skills. If you’re not sure how to find the exact location of an IP address, you can use the following methods to do a reverse phone lookup.

Method 1: Use a people search tool

To find someone’s location with a phone number, you can try searching the number on people search engines. They have a large database that allows you to cross-reference the number with millions of public records and social media data. In most cases you’ll also see the location of the owner.

1. Intelius

When searching for someone’s location, you’ll want to make Intelius your first stop. It’s one of the best people search services that comes with a powerful phone database. After you enter a phone number, it’ll flip through billions of public records and 50+ social networks to help you find the owner, location history and more.

Step 1: Open the Intelius search page.

Step 2: Enter the phone number and click Search.

Step 3: Sit tight while Intelius flips through millions of public records. Once it locates a match, you can subscribe to a plan to access the report, which may contain all the photos, a timeline of address histories and 50+ social media profiles of the phone owner.

2. BeenVerified

BeenVerified is a long standing brand and a powerful alternative to Intelius. By collecting millions of records from social networks and offline sources, BeenVerified makes it possible to cross-reference and find a person’s location history with just a name or a phone number.

Step 1: Open the BeenVerified search page.

Step 2: Enter the phone number and click Search.

Step 3: Wait for BeenVerified to search the database. Once it locates a match, it’ll generate a report containing all the available info associated with the phone number, which may include owner’s name, past and current addresses and social media profiles.

3. Instant Checkmate

Instant Checkmate is one of the few search engines that uses deep web scan to gather hidden information. With this feature, it offers information you may never find on Google. By searching with a phone number, you may see who owns this number, where the person lives and accounts linked to the number on 50+ social media websites.

1. Go to Instant Checkmate.

Method 2: Use Grabify to get the IP address

If you’re still interested in finding the person’s IP address, you can use online IP loggers like Grabify to pull the IP from a phone number. These services will generate a tracking link that allows you to sniff the target’s IP address.

1. First you need to prepare a normal link. For example you can use a YouTube video link.
   
2. Go to Grabify. Paste the link in the box and click Create URL.
   
3. Grabify will generate a tracking link (see New URL). But we’re not done yet. To make your link look normal, click View Other link Shorteners.
   
4. Choose a shortener to generate a new shortened tracking link.
   
5. Share the link with your friend. To track a phone number, you can send a text with the link attached. Try to make the content look enticing.
   
6. Once someone clicks the link, you can go back to Grabify to view the logged IP address.
   

Method 3: Use a phone tracking app

You can also use a phone tracking app to lookup phone numbers on the fly. Apps like BeenVerified and Truecaller allow you to find almost anyone using a phone number. Whenever you get a call from someone you don’t know, you can lookup the number and find the associated location right away.

(Note that most of the phone tracking apps require an active subscription to activate all the features.)
