Car Warranty Check

Enter a VIN to check vehicle warranty details

Want to check the warranty terms of your car? Or are you planning to buy a used car and want to check if it’s still under warranty? This post will introduce how to check the car warranty easily by VIN and help you figure out if the warranty expired or will expire soon.

What is a car warranty?

A new car warranty (manufacturer/factory warranty) is a promise of vehicle manufacturers to cover repairs or replacement of faulty components for a specified period of time. With an active warranty, you don’t have to worry about the expensive cost when something goes wrong with your vehicle.

New cars come with several warranties that cover different parts of the car. For example, a bumper-to-bumper/basic warranty covering all the defects of the vehicle usually lasts for 3 years or 36,000 miles, whichever comes first. A powertrain warranty that covers essential mechanical parts like the engine, transmission, and drivetrain lasts longer, between 5 years/60,000 miles – 10 years/100,000 miles.

You can also purchase an extended warranty from your dealerships, which can provide various levels of coverage for your vehicle once the manufacturer warranty expires.

How to check the car warranty?

Here are three ways for you to find a car’s warranty, whether it’s your own car or a second-hand car you’re planning to buy.

Method 1 – Find the original warranty terms

You can find the original manufacturer warranty terms for specific vehicles from the manufacturer’s website. Simply search for the manufacturer’s name or make, model, and year + warranty (e.g. Ford warranty check) on Google, and you may find the official resources.

Steps to check the warranty information vary greatly by manufacturer. Some like Ford require you to enter a vehicle’s VIN while others allow you to view the warranty coverage simply by selecting a model and year

By checking your VIN, some manufacturers will identify the vehicle’s condition and when the warranty expires.

In most cases, you’ll only get general terms. You’ll need to collect your vehicle’s information (estimated start date of warranty and current mileage) to determine how much warranty remains.

The warranty becomes active on the date of the new car purchase, not the manufacture date or the model year.

Method 2 – Check a used car’s warranty status by VIN

If you’re considering purchasing a used car, a vehicle history report will offer you deep insights. It will show you if the vehicle’s warranty is active or expired, help you determine the remaining warranty, and reveal possible accident history, title records, and sales listings, etc.

Here are the best two tools for you to unlock a vehicle report.

Option 1 – BeenVerified

BeenVerified is one of the best-known people search engines online and features a robust database for VIN and license plate lookup. Simply enter a VIN number, and within seconds you’ll have a deep insight into a car’s value and history. Moreover, you can take advantage of other search tools like people search or reverse phone lookup to learn more about the person you’re dealing with and make better decisions.

1) Go to the BeenVerified VIN search page. Enter the number and click SEARCH. Or you can search by the license plate number.

2) It may take a while for BeenVerified to scan the database and gather available information. From the left pane, you can click the Warranties section to view details.

Option 2 – Bumper

As one of the top vehicle search tools, Bumper aims to make any car buying easier. It utilizes millions of vehicle records from leading sources such as government agencies, insurance companies, and auto industry partners to dig up a car’s ownership, maintenance, warranty, repair records, accidents, insurance claims and more.

1) Visit the official Bumper website. Then choose a search type you prefer (by VIN or license plate), enter the required information and click SEARCH.

2) Wait until the vehicle history report gets ready. You can also download the app to view the results on your mobile devices.

Method 3 – Look up the license plate

If you don’t have the VIN at hand, a license plate lookup also works. A car’s license plate is usually linked to a VIN in the public vehicle records and could enable you to trace vehicle warranty, title status, and necessary information.

Method 4 – Contact a dealership

Apart from using a third-party VIN check service, you can contact the local dealership where you bought your car from. They should help you identify the vehicle’s warranty status and tell you what is and is not covered in particular. You can provide the VIN for a search or drive your car to the place so they can check out the VIN in person.

Tips: Is the used car warranty transferrable?

For many used car shoppers, having the coverage of the remaining factory warranty is essential. So you may ask if the vehicle’s warranty is still active, is it transferrable to the new owner? Typically, a valid factory/manufacturer warranty is transferrable, as it’s tied to a specific vehicle and VIN.

However, some may come with certain conditions. For example, the original powertrain warranty (10 yrs/100,000 miles) of Kia, Hyundai, Genesis, and Mitsubishi only applies to the initial owner. When the ownership changes, the warranty drops to 5 yrs/60,000 miles.

CPO warranty* and extended warranty may also be transferrable but usually require a transfer fee.

* CPO warranty are provided for certified pre-owned cars, which are used vehicles that have been thoroughly inspected and repaired. It usually covers an additional year / 12,000 miles besides the vehicle’s remaining factory warranty.
